Some people disagree over when the first video of the giant squid was taken in its natural habitat. Some think the video was taken in 2006, though this may not be true as the squid seen in that footage may not have been a giant squid.
The first reliable "squideo" of the squid in its natural habitat was taken as recently as 2012. The six-week expedition was funded by the Discovery Channel and the Japanese Broadcasting Commission. The bubble-shaped submarine used to shoot the video was made by the company Triton.
The submarine used a camera system with a red light, called the "Medusa." The reason they used red light was that deep sea animals see light with long wavelengths, like red. They did this so that they would not scare away the squid with a bright light.
The submarine descended 700 meters in Japan's waters. Scientists Jim Harris and Tsunemi Kubodera watched the giant squid change colors--from magical gold to silver-- for an amazing and groundbreaking 18 minutes.
The video was broadcasted in 2013.
